Interstate Importation of Vegetation Samples into Western Australia

Importation of Plant material into Western Australia is controlled by the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007. As a result, there are strict laws in place to regulate the movement of plant material across the WA border, within Australia. Therefore, when submitting vegetation samples collected in other Australian states or territories to LabWest for Biogeochemical analysis, the following check list should be followed:

  • Check on the WA Organism List (https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/organisms) that the plant is category S11- Unrestricted. If the plant is restricted, it may need an import permit. Eucalypts will generally require a permit.
  • All plant specimens must be:
    • not knowingly infested or diseased,
    • not infested with live insects,
    • free from excessive soil.
  • Package the samples securely.
    • Package the samples in a sealed plastic bag within an outer container or package. It is good practice to pre-dry the samples somewhat, if possible, to minimise any rot forming during transport.
    • Pack them tightly with padding to minimise movement within the consignment.
    • Use good quality boxes.
  • Clearly label names and addresses of sender and receiver.
  • Have a clear description of the sample material contained within the consignment. Use common names and scientific names where possible. e.g. label as ‘spinifex (Triodia) samples’ and not just a generic ‘plant samples’.
  • Make sure that the transport company is aware of the consignment material as they may have to declare it at the border.
  • LabWest is a Quarantine WA approved Premise (W0699-02-QF-LA).
